Dartmouth Hotels & Motels
The city of Halifax is famed for its history and charm, but there’s another side to this diverse metropolis that many tourists don’t see—Dartmouth, Halifax’s nearby suburban fraternal twin. Located directly across the Halifax harbour, Dartmouth is an area full of residential neighbourhoods and shopping malls. That’s not to say it doesn’t have the same charm that Halifax has—this city, which was founded in 1873, has its own rich history and several important historic sites to prove it. What’s more, Dartmouth has the distinction of being known as the “City of Lakes,” as there are dozens of secluded bodies of water in the area. Staying in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia also provides easy access to the many eclectic towns and villages that surround this thriving village—and there are many hotels and motels to choose from.
ORIENTATION
Dartmouth is situated between Halifax and the Halifax Airport, so most visitors end up here without even realizing. Two major bridges connect Dartmouth with downtown Halifax—the MacKay Toll Bridge and the MacDonald Bridge. As well, the two cities are linked by regular ferry service.
WHERE TO STAY
Because Dartmouth is largely a suburban area, it’s lacking the vibrant downtown hub that Halifax has but it has areas that are worth exploring nonetheless, particularly around the Mic Mac Mall, a large mall that is Dartmouth’s biggest selling point among many Haligonians. Several accommodation options are available here, including the Quality Inn and Express Lodge, both of which are mere steps away from the Mic Mac Lake. Nearby, the Lake City Motel provides budget accommodations in an equally enviable location.
The Mic Mac Lake isn’t the only waterfront property available in Dartmouth, however. The Holiday Inn Harbourview offers a stunning view of Halifax from the other side of the harbour, not to mention easy access to the waterfront and downtown Halifax via the MacDonald Bridge. The hotel offers an outdoor pool, fitness centre, meeting rooms and free Internet access.
Farther north near the MacKay Bridge is an area known as Tufts Cove. Though this area is somewhat of an industrial area, there are chain hotels in the area that provide comfortable rooms in a convenient location near highway 111, which connects Halifax to the airport.
Surrounded by vast parkland and walking trails, Frenchman Lake is a popular place to visit in Dartmouth, and the nearby Ramada Park Place Hotel is an equally popular place to stay. Considered one of Dartmouth’s finest hotels, the Park Place provides an indoor pool with water slides, a hot tub, a sauna and a fitness centre. What’s more, they provide a complimentary shuttle to downtown Halifax all within convenient proximity of the Halifax Airport.
Those interested in staying somewhere with a little more charm than the major chain hotels of Dartmouth should consider venturing into the residential areas and surrounding towns, where cozy and eclectic bed and breakfasts are in abundance.
